Wiki Presentation

  1. Dear Notable Corcoran Personage and Photography Eminence Little Toby – this was a terrific presentation I thought. One of the best, and they’ve all been pretty great. I learned a lot, including the origin (derivation?) of the word Wiki (wiki wiki). Until now, I’d been under the false impression that Wiki meant one thing and one thing only – Wikipedia. The existence of Wiki Commons, Wiki Species and WikiQuote is very welcome news to me, and I have bookmarked them in hopes of incorporating them into my consciousness and not just forgetting about them (Easy to do – in fact, I would love to see a study of how many times a person has to visit or use a website before that site gets burned into the brain, and becomes something you return to regularly, for research, or fun, or both. I’m guessing the number might be six. I don’t know why, exactly, except that’s my gut. Once isn’t enough, twice is getting closer, three times is a decent number of visits, but I think six would be the magic number.) I think all of these wonderful wikis are further evidence, if any were needed, of the collective wisdom of the commons, and the idea, which I think has been proven or thoroughly explored in game theory, that the individual decisions of the public (as opposed to the mob) almost always turn out to be the best ones, and better than the decisions made by an individual. I believe this, or rather, in my gut, I suspect it is true, and so do most people. Web democracy lives!
